This is intended for discussion. For the sake of the discussion I will fall on the side of keeping WP while making sure it’s under our own control and not a spiralling mess of conflicting plug-in goodness.

[I know so far it has been ok and the site is fairly fast but I know what will happen when we add a few more things we need and then when we get to even just a couple of hundred users!]

The ready-made themes are incredibly bloated because they strive to be able to do lots of different things for lots of different users. Can we make our own theme from scratch and would that be wise?

        Pros

        • WordPress core itself appears to be a good, tried and tested codebase
        • More (non-coder) people are familiar with it than any other system.
        • The Editor is quite easy to learn
        • It can have all the things we need built in.
        • Most, if not all plugins would not be needed because with our own theme we could build features right in without them, and without the bloat.
        • There are very basic themes to start us off if we need that, and some already are set up for frameworks such as laravel which would be nice.
        • We don’t need to code a multi-purpose theme for many different uses, we just need exactly to suit us and nothing else. So, as well as being efficient, it will be easier than catering for many sites’ needs. And we don’t need e-commerce either, What a pleasant change!

        Cons

        • Using existing themes and plugins for all things we need will make it hopelessly bloated and slow.
        • Using a theme builder will (it seems to me) be no better than using the existing themes because the theme builders themselves make bloated themes.

Just for an example of bloat, I often see what appears to be 6 or 7 layers of CSS all cancelling each other out.

        Questions

        • If we just fork WordPress and buddypress (or do we even need to fork it?) and build our own theme manually, would that save a lot of work as opposed to starting from nothing at all and writing pretty much the same functionality?
        • Could we build our own complete social network from scratch and make it as easy to use (for the sponsors and recipients) as WordPress already is?
        • Would we even need to fork it? I mean with our own theme and (if needed) plug-ins, would they take care of the bloat problem?

Seriously, bloat was the only thing that stopped us last time. I had everything we needed working. And now we don’t even need the payment processing as it is 100% direct.

        And another thing…
Our hosting is cheap but good. I moved the entire old site to an expensive and supposedly specialist WordPress host in the hope that it would work there, and it was just as slow and annoying as on our existing cheap hosting.

Further, we will eventually make the whole thing open source so it has to be good for cheap hosting so that small projects can use it.

We can always pick a theme and edit it to perfection leave the work to me

But I do need some basic things like color
Need to get a log for the site and the color of the logo we will mix it up with the theme

I think we should look into the home page first build that then we can now look into the users page

Hi yes the problem was I tried a few themes but very few will work with the social aspects of the site. The one we have I just ended up with by default because with other themes I tried the other features would variously stop working or were not even visible at all.

I gave up because like I said we only need this to be working and not necessarily aesthetically perfect, just to get up and running quickly, so we can then build our own site that only does the exact things we need and nothing else.

I’d rather we all spend most time and effort on setting up the new purpose-built theme and site and spend minimal effort to just get this one running basically quickly, which it almost is now. This theme seems pretty stable with the add-ons we are using and will do for now.

We can fix a few minor things, some of which I have posted already, and roll out the first stage with testers who know the situation and aren’t expecting a finished product. This way we’ll learn what we actually need and don’t need.

Nobody’s done this before so there’s nothing to copy, and I’d hate to waste people’s time getting things done on a site that is kind of experimental and still evolving. Does that make sense?

Re: Logo we dont really have one. I had used clickforafrica.org before and had a good logo and color scheme etc but then my monitor script told me the squatted clickforcharity.net was coming due for renewal. I grabbed it before the squatter and so now we have no branding or logo.

Africa was easy, all the iconography to do with charity is kind of wishy-washy and fake-looking! I’m kind of tempted to stick with the africa logo and colors but that’s again something we can leave to when we do the new site.

I prefer clickforafrica over clickforcharity but the consensus seems to be in favour of clickfocharity.

                  I see
Since I have light problem today being
I will work on a logo
You’ll get the pictures on telegram from the one you pick I can build something with that color

That should be a good way to start
