We are already paying (directly) a local person to act as a secretary for their office. We also provided a tower, tank, and water pumping system to keep the tree nursery watered. Prior to that, we were able to get them a laptop, an antenna system to get them a more reliable internet connection, and a decent camera so they could do videos and good photos.
Next is to pay a few staff to maintain the nursery and plant and protect the trees. We’ll also be paying someone to act as the food forest manager.
Here’s a video intro to the project.
Overview
Currently, it is running, and we have planted 200,000 seedlings so far. To do it properly will cost around 400 dollars per month. (Here you can see how different direct sponsorship is to Big Charity.)
General Description
- The team intends to plant another 200,000 trees at a rate of 50,000 per year, so the project will last for 4 years.
- This forest will alleviate the periodic droughts we experience, which cause extreme food shortages in some years. Trees reduce drought both by holding water in the landscape and by causing rain to fall. By providing ground cover and binding the soil with their roots, they prevent erosion. Fruit trees and herbs are included in the planting, which also helps alleviate food shortages.
- A forest is self-sustaining once established, and so the project will be completed in about 4 years.

Solar water pump system for the nursery | 600 | Completed |
The water pump cost about $450 and was paid for via our crowdfunding platform. We raised over $600. The rest of the system costs were raised elsewhere. We had to change the server that hosts the payments system though, so here’s an image from it instead.
